I’M SO NOT HAVING FUN! :(

I don’t want to gross you out with the gory details but it’s been an ugly week for me.  About 3 weeks ago I woke up with what seemed like the flu, but got over it.  However, the cough lingered a bit longer.  Last Tuesday, I woke up with a horrible, hacking cough and it’s been hell ever since.

I coughed so much I was throwing up(sorry, gory details).  Eventually, I had to give in and go to the emergency room because my doctor couldn’t see me.  They ruled out pneumonia with a chest xray.  After they sucked all the blood out of my body (lots n lots of vials) and ran some tests, it was determined I have bronchitis.    So five hours later, while driving out of the hospital parking lot, I threw up the antibiotic I had taken.

After we got the meds prescribed, I went home (thank God my mom was with me) and just tried to get some sleep. The coughing had not let me sleep for a couple of days and I’m just exhausted.

I’m the kind of person that doesn’t like to go to the doctor unless it’s ….well…no other alternative.  So I get home and take the Robitussin with CODEIN thinking that will help me sleep….but no…it makes me vomit.    Then I try the inhaler, and that made me feel jittery, although it did help  the cough.  I ate some crackers and some broth and again, had to vomit.   So, in a nutshell, that’s the kind of week I’ve had.

Today I woke up feeling a bit dizzy.  I drank some warm broth (1/4 cup) and a cracker.  AND YAY, didn’t throw up.  I’m going to have a little gatorade in a little bit and see if that stays down.  If not, I’m going right back to the E.R. because I feel the dehydration symptoms coming on.

ON A GOOD NOTE  ?………lost 6 pounds this week!  The irony is that this past month I have eaten the healthiest ever and yet have been the sickest ever……go figure.

Not fun!

I’ve got herbs…..who knew??

My son’s girlfriend asked me the other day if I had any ‘rosemary’ so she could make him some tea.  I said…well, I know I don’t have any in the cupboard but let’s check the back yard.  You see, my mom is an avid planter, gardener.  For the 10 years she lived here with me she must have planted every fruit tree and herb you can think of.   We have a very, small back yard but still she managed to plant and grow Papaya trees, lemon trees (notice I’m using plural), banana trees, and some whose names I just don’t know.

She’s always made us teas from herbs in her garden, I just didn’t know what they were.  They were tasty, I drank them.  So Chelsea and I head out to the yard and start sniffing plants.  OMG! I have ‘rosemary’!!!!! A couple of bushes of them.  Who knew??

AND……lemongrass….this stuff makes the best tea.  It has a zesty lemony taste AND  has antibacterial and antifungal properties, but most important, it tastes really good, hot or cold.

It doesn’t take much to make me happy!

Yesterday I was expecting that I would be sore today, after the 52 minute dvd bootcamp workout.

 I was right.

But, only my butt is sore, which is great.  I must have really worked harder on that area. Great thing is that I felt good enough to finally start the “Couch to 5k” program today.  Today consisted of 20 minutes of  walking and running intervals with a 5 minute warmup walk before and after the run.  The goal is to be able to run 3.1 miles(5k)at the end of 7-9 weeks. I finished that and felt great, probably could have done more but didn’t want to push it.

Of course I had my 1/2 minibagel with spinach spread prior to the workout.   And after………I’m so excited, because this really turned out YUMMMO!!!  I made a mango-black bean salsa!  Can you say SUPER YUMMMO?!! Anyone that really knows me will tell you that I enjoy cooking but not for hours.  Unlike my mom who spends hours making stews, and preparing the most delicious croquettes you’ve ever tasted(a process that could take 2 days), I like to be in and out in 10-20 minutes tops.  That’s why I love stir frying, its quick, easy and tastes great.  Even better on my list is a no-cook recipe.  I revamped this recipe that I saw in a magazine and here it is:

1 ripe mango, peeled and diced

1 can black beans

1 can garbanzo beans

drain  and rinse both

chopped onion, tomato and cucumber

You’ll notice I don’t have measurements because I just kind of go with the flow…

1. In a large bowl, combine the beans, onions, cucumber, and mango.

2. In a blender or food processor puree 1/3 cup mangos with olive oil and vinegar or (you can use  any Italian dressing)

I know this is not a new recipe but it sure tastes good.   The mango and onions taste so good, you may not need the dressing, but oh the dressing is yum!  Looks like this will be my new dish to bring to parties.  Scoop it up with chips, serve it as a side, top some spinach leaves for a great salad, or add some chicken and you have a hearty meal.

Oh no, it’s dead!

My treadmill has been with me over 15 years.  It’s lived in almost every room in my house, the garage (worst, too hot), my bedroom(used mostly to hang clothes), my mom’s bedroom, and the family room(my nephew plays on it).   I have on occasion used it for exercise purposes, actually clocking a few miles and my highest calorie count, 250.   Today is the beginning of a new relationship with my TM.  It’s going to be a big part of my weight loss journey and I’m excited.

Im finally feeling good enough to start exercising again! YAY!  Since I’ve been sick with a cold for the last 10 days, I’ve been focusing more on my eating plan and recipes.  I’ve lost a couple of pounds so I’m excited, because I know that once I start to exercise, more will come off (despite Time’s article).  So I laced up my shoes, had my pre-workout snack (spinach dip), got my water bottle ready, ipod’s loaded, all stretched out, jumped on the treadmill…..and it’s not responding….NOOOOOOO!!

God is this your way of getting me out of the house to workout?  Please, no, it’s 100 degrees outside!  You know I hate those DVD workouts!  But today I’ll have to resort to one.  Let’s see, I have a couple of “The Firm” cd’s….those kick butt!   Let’s try the “bootcamp maximum calorie burn”, oh yeah!   I’ll probably be really sore tomorrow….oh wait, wait, wait….that’s not a positive affirmation!  Cancel that thought.   Tomorrow will be a rest day, I’m sure :) .

What this really means is that I will have to get my sleeping patterns to be more consistent.  When I get enough sleep, I can wake up early, before it’s too hot and go for a walk/jog.  Or, I could do it in the evening…who am I kidding, I don’t like to work out in the evening.  Morning, it is!  Well, part of any journey is adapting, and today I will have to adapt.  So off I go to burn some fat while jumping, hopping, squatting and lunging for the next 52 minutes.  Wish me luck!

What’s does your workout include?

Mini bagels, got to love em’!

My body is detoxing from 46 years worth of major carb intake (mostly bread, especially Cuban bread). I’ve been on the hunt for some good alternatives and here’s what I found:   mini bagels!   They’re awesome, tasty, crunchy when you toast them and ONLY 100 calories!  I’ve been making some seriously yummy, satisfying and filling mini meals that I serve on a salad plate.  This is the plate that I eat most meals in.  And as a bonus, check out the motivational words….courage, belief, enthusiasm, commitment.  Is that the cutest way to have a meal or what?

Back to mini bagels…I’ve been looking for them in whole wheat but haven’t found them.  So in the meantime, when and if I crave bread, these work!  Eventually I will cut out all white stuff but at this stage I’m still weaning myself off of my favorite food on earth, BREAD!  Portions are a huge part of any weight loss program and I have found it easier using this salad plate and I don’t worry about portions.   Check out some of the mini meals that are mostly about 150 calories!

A Lil’ attitude goes a long way!

While on this journey, I mentioned how my goal is to lose 59 lbs. and feel healthy along the way and in the future.  I’m a visual gal and I have been working on visualizing how the healthy food I’m putting in my body is enhancing my brain, cells, organs, bones, etc.. I’m also an ‘affirmations’ gal (thanks to Mary Kay) and really try to keep my thoughts in a positive state.   I’m not embarking on this journey as a “diet”, but am however embracing it as a positive change in habits.  And I am feeling GOOOOOD!

I have fallen in love with my challenge.  In love? yep, in love. I know what you’re thinking….” Martha hasn’t been on a date in a long while and I think she forgot about falling in love” ….You read it right, in love.  When I think of how blessed I am and how amazing I feel  each day that I take action towards my goal, I feel like…well….in an almost  “in love” state. :)   I want to be around for my family for a long time and therefore I’m taking this one day at a time.  I am appreciating every moment of every day that God has blessed me with.

We CAN control our thoughts! So, I choose to think on great things (Phil 3:14) (Phil 4:8-9).

WE ALL have strengths and the one I choose to focus on to help me get through my challenges is my faith.  (Phil4:13)   I want to give God the glory when my goal is achieved!  And, while he’s giving me the courage and strength every day!  How can I possibly fail??  That’s why I’m in love with this challenge!  I hope that somehow my thoughts and words will encourage someone, somewhere to make a positive change in their life as well.  Blessings.

Love my Green tea

A week ago I started blogging and one of the main purposes was to be accountable with my eating, exercising,  and sleeping routines.  Well, the exercising and sleeping went right out the window as I woke up over a week ago with a sore throat, chills, aches and soreness.  I still have the sore throat and cough and have now passed it on to my son, poor baby.  I was reading somewhere recently about things to avoid drinking while having a sore throat and to my surprise tea was on the list.  I normally drink a cup or two a day of green tea and have recently started drinking the decaf version.  This past week, I believe I’m up to 3 cups a day with honey and lemon.  Isn’t that the common remedy?

Since I haven’t had much of an appetite my meals have been light and many smoothies.
I am a smoothie lover (hence the blog theme).  I used to make my smoothies with low fat milk and then substituted the milk with OJ.  But lately, I’ve been using the green tea instead.  My favorite smoothie this week has included:  strawberries, mangoes, bananas, blueberries, green tea and honey. YUM! So filling and full of all the great stuff our bodies need.

Here’s to healthy eating!

Yumm hummus for the weekYou know you have no life when you get excited about what you ate and feel an urgency to blog about it.  It wasnt anything from a fancy restaurant or cafe, it was something really simple created in my own kitchen with my mini-cuisinart.  I love that thing.  I love hummus! It’s so easy to make yet so satisfying!  What Ive been doing is preparing hummus for the week and then adding it to whatever I can.  Last week, while making tuna I substituted the mayo with hummus and it was really yummy.  I get a can of chick peas ( I can just eat them out of the can), onions, garlic (love garlic) and lemon juice and blend it all up in the cuisinart.

WAIT THERE’S MORE!  I’ve also been preparing a spinach spread that’s also yummy and quick to make.  I use frozen spinach, lots of garlic cloves, and olive oil. Sautee it in a pan for a little bit and then blend it in the cuisinart…VOILA…a quick, energizing, healthy snack!

This is a real ‘pick me up’ snack for pre or post workout..(remember Popeye, instant muscles).  I toast whole wheat wraps, break them up in pieces and dip right into the spinach..add a dash of salt n pepper..

So here’s the best part, promise.  Today I wasn’t that hungy so I used 1/2 of a whole wheat wrap, spread some hummus, spinach dip, added leftover chicken and carrots and OMG!!! it was soooo yummy.  You taste so many different flavors, the garlic, onions, lemon juice all blend so nicely!  And I bet this quick little meal is under 300 calories.

Can you digitally fix ME?

Image is very important to some of us.  How we look and present ourselves many times says a lot about us.  But have we gone too far with the ‘skinnier the better’  beliefs?  Have you seen the upcoming cover of SELF magazine.  I’m a fan of SELF but am very disappointed with what they did to American Idol star Kelly Clarkson.  Kelly’s on the cover and they digitally removed about 20 pounds off her.  I know it’s common to remove some flaws, pimples, wrinkles, but to actually make her look 20 lbs lighter!!!  The Editor-in-Chief says something like this…..Kelly has a wonderful personality, an amazing spirit,  we altered her appearance to make her look her personal best.  Well, miss Editor, that personal best pic is not really her!  Kelly says she doesnt care what people think of her weight.  Yet she let them take off 20 lbs?! IS THAT RIDICULOUS or what??  What are your thoughts?

Eat well, live long!

Would you want to live to the ripe old age of  125 or maybe 150? Well, some experts on longevity seem to think you can.   I was reading in “BEWELLBUZZ” about  an 86 year old man who is still healthy, energized and has the mind of someone much much younger.   Oprah interviewed him and this is what he says his secret is: large quantities of fruit and vegetables, plus an hour of daily exercise(he lives on a farm) .  Simple enough, I think, minus the farm.  I like some veggies and after reading the report from the North Carolina Research Campus  I will be adding  more variety to the veggies I eat.   That campus studies the health benefits of fruits and vegetables.

Here’s some of the healthiest foods on the earth, according the them:

Pineapples, blueberries, apples, bananas, papayas, blackberries, kiwi, oranges, raspberries, strawberries and many more fruits.  As far as veggies:  Broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, kale, green cabbage, asparagus, spinach and red bell peppers.  My favorites, mangoes are on the list. Mangoes support immunity, lower “bad cholesterol”, among many other great qualities.  Did you know that Butternut squash and Kiwi ‘combat wrinkles’??  And Papayas and Bananas ‘enhance fat burning’!!!  Definitely will be eating more of those. I actually have papaya trees in my back yard.

So there you have one of the secrets to a long healthy life.
